A friend suggested that it may be two half spheres spinning so fast that it looks like a ball with a rod through the middle for the dome attachment.

That's exactly what I tried to say in the second post, with my bad English

That idea doesn't "mesh" with my preconceived ideas that have nothing to do with real life. For example, the "ports" roll off-center over the top. If it was two centered hemisphere, you'd expect the "ports" to be confined to a hemisphere.

IRL I'm not sure why you'd do hemispheres. Having it work like a hamsterball is pretty easy.

The "puppet" idea though made me think, you could have rods spinning and stuff, esp if you were only looking at it from one side. (I don't like the idea of it being a puppet though, and don't think that jives with Mark Hamill's statement)
