IRL I'm not sure why you'd do hemispheres. Having it work like a hamsterball is pretty easy.
The "puppet" idea though made me think, you could have rods spinning and stuff, esp if you were only looking at it from one side. (I don't like the idea of it being a puppet though, and don't think that jives with Mark Hamill's statement)
