R2-D2 is probably the most recognized Star Wars droid. He's an "Astromech" droid along with many other similar droids, including droids like Chopper.

Artoo's about the oldest of the droids builder's have been working on and there are plenty of clubs, sites and resources for building Astromech droids.

We recommend starting at the Builder's Club at [1] to learn more about Astromechs. From there you can find regional clubs and tons of other resources.

Most recently there has been a pretty active group on Facebook as well.
