Lynelle's R1 build (or the big green ugly one)
#1
So, after CVII I'm planning to start building one of these. I don't think anyone has one, and I kinda like the military look and dorkiness of it. I've been wanting to build one for at least three years now, but with two R2's, a mouse droid, and half a scrubber droid, I've kinda got my hands full finishing the electronics on R2-AL and finishing Goldie. Thus the wait until after CVII.

I plan to make a small paper mache model first just to see how everything fits together. Then I'll probably make it out of cardboard and styrene with a wooden frame to stable it all. I'm planning a treadmill type drive system because it might be the most stable with such a large droid (he's about six feet tall full size). So, I'll keep tabs of my research and ideas here until I'm ready to build.

I thought you kept saying he was green. I must have misunderstood.

In any case, way cool. I actually started a set of plans for these guys a while back. I got side tracked and started on something else, but you may very well inspire me to come back to it.

I look forward to the process!

It's not green? I thought it was military OD green with reflective yellow stripes. Anyway, it looks like a big long tube with an odd shaped dome, a box of greeblies on the back, and a somewhat cone shaped foot with the top lopped off and a plastic tube wrapped around it. Add a bunch of other greeblies and tubes, add some paint with weathered scratches, and I think I've got the jest of it. Does anyone have a back and left side view of this thing? I think I can use found items for alot of the stuff. And a couple HP's with red lenses.

Looking at this some more, I think the foot is black, but I'm pretty sure the rest is military green.

They made an action figure of it, too. Hunt down one of them for more reference and to help you visualize how the shapes and angles relate to each other.

I have a whole pile of images of the action figure. Hi res stuff from different angles. I'll get them uploaded to a reference gallery some time in the next couple of days and you can check them out. There aren't a lot of images of the actual droid out there, that I've found anyway, but I've read some discussions about the inaccuracies of the toy, so someone, somewhere must have seen the sides of it we don't see in the film. We have to be able to find something if we keep searching.

And as I said, at some point in the not to distant future, I'll try to get back to the plans I was working on. Maybe those will be of some use as well.

Thanks, guys, I'll have to find that action figure (since I collect droid figures anyway).

I can't wait to see what you do with this. He's always been one of my favorite odd-ball droids. Edwardo posted this video of him being worn as a costume. I'd love to wear that one some day: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eRtLxhij8Mw

That's a cool video! I saw a Christmas tree a couple weeks ago that was just a frame on casters someone shoved around.
Lynelle, have you considered a mixed-mode build? Eg: some of the Dalek builders have them either as costumes or R/C. (Another hint, not sure if it's small enough, is that they use powered wheelchairs for bases).

Get anywhere with this idea or did it stall?
