Lumpy's MSE Droid Build (Laser Cut)
#1
Hey All!

Thought I would share my build of my laser cut shell.

A BIG thanks to Kresty for re-working the files to a more usable
format so that we could cut on the laser.

A few notes :

** I cut this completely out of 1/8" Baltic Birch **
** I modified the middle frame from original file to add a second frame wall to interlock top/bottom together. **
** Yes dimensions may be off a smidge as original files called for 1/16" material in areas **
** Laser used was a Trotec Speed 100 - Bed size 12"x24" **
** I built this over 5 days working in the evenings. **
** I was high on Krazy glue and Bondo fumes! **

Here we go!

I re-nested the original Kresty file to fit my laser bed (12"x24"). Ended up being 7 sheets of Baltic Birch used.

Glueing the top/bottom frames. I had to modify the file as my laser bed is only 12" and this part was 12.250". I keyed the ends for easy assembly.

Lots of Krazy glue and Kicker used.

Inner frames and side getting assembled.

Just getting a feel as to how it will look.

Wood filling as I go. (Rev. 2 - I removed label engraving from parts)

Another check to show scale of MSE droid next to R2.  Gonk is "mini" so he doesn't count. lol

More touch ups of wood fill. Bondo Glass'd the inner seams to add strength to the build.

Bondo Glass'd the inner seams to add strength to the build. It's not pretty but it's internal anyway.

Getting there!

Middle frame almost complete.

Top shell Bondo Glass'd to middle frame.

Just a thrown together test fit of side panel and my "custom" heat sinks.

Some test 14 pin chips. Just went off a spec file. Just testing. I think they will look ok.

As I say.. "Everything is getting painted black!".

Cool, looking good. I like the dive weights, hadn't thought of that Smile Seems like it's been going reasonably smoothly?

Going pretty smooth. I cut a second kit today to test my updated files and such. Going to try to use wood glue
more than Krazy glue 2nd time around.

Fairly solid once all together. Interlocks nicely with the changes I made.

Cheers!

Cool, what changes did you have to make?

The primary change was to the Recess frame.

1. I widened the recess frame edge to 1"
2. I created a new second inner box frame for the recess that goes from one side to the other.

This allowed an interlocking frame. Basically one side has the inner frame and the other has the recess frame. They press together. The recess frame now contacts giving a firm lock.

I'll try to get a pic.

I was wondering about making the inner box go between the sides - I was going to do that if I added tongues and grooves.

When I have time I might try to tab everything for easier assembly. My local maker group is looking to do a group build. It would make it much easier as I constantly need that third hand. Lol.
