Well, spray painting the eyes didn't go too well as the balsa wood proved to be too abosrbant. I got a can of spray-on primer which promises to help fill cracks and such, so I did a couple of coats with that. Definitely seemed to smooth out the wood grain, although I got some sandpaper to smooth it out a bit more. I'll try one more coat of primer after that and then apply the blue paint again.
Unfortunately I've expended my budget for the week so I'll have to pick up the pipe and floor flange some time next week. That's all right, because I want to start on building the base this weekend.
