I saw some of this debate over on astromech.    I love the fact that people aren't sure Smile

I honestly don't know, either, but I could guess that it is simply because of the highly composited nature of the image. In all likelihood none of those people or critters were in the room with each other at the same time when they were photographed. They made sure to use very diffuse lighting so there wouldn't be shadows to give that away, but ET looks like they had a hard time color grading to match.  Anyway, it (BB8) has the same level of detail in the hatches and utility arms that the display model had (which the stage version did not) but has some differences, like those three silver notches, things like that, so it's not the same droid. With a composited image like this I would think rendering the CG version would be a lot easier than setting up a shoot for the practical version.
