Now that Celebration Europe is over, I can re concentrate on this build.

(Myself & Mike B, built the Jabba gate)



When at CE, I was chatting with a fellow builder about WED as he wants to also build one. Said I needed to clean up the 3D files and organise them to their latest version, that I had used or that had needed altering after I had printed them.

The new extended servo leads require connectors fitted. And the Claw arm ones needed to be insulated as they are inside the aluminium tube, with no connector blocks.




With the Claw arm servo, fitted lower down the mast, was a reminder of how fiddly connecting it up to o the linkages was . I need a new clamping bracket for it though to brace the servo from moving.

The first three servo leads, are sheathed inside expandable sleeving. The arm servo lead is, for now, loose inside the mast.

Spent ages trying to arrange the servo leads for the neck and eyes so that they don’t catch on the metal rod that reaches up from the arm servo to the linkage pivot point.

New Lens mould:
3D printed of a much better, smoother finished lens blank. Sanded it smooth even further. Then mixed up the mould putty and applied it over the blank. I then flipped it over so that its base would be flat with the bench.


I used a lighter held over the surface to remove the air bubbles. Whilst this was drying, I removed the two first attempt lenses and tried to smooth out the print lines.
I also lightly sanded the new lens to make it more opaque. I could of bought opaque resin in the first place .

May’s update:

So I’ve added some structural supports to the top panel section to take the weight off the side screws.

These are screwed in top and bottom.

And as can be seen, I went with 3D printing the Logic Housing (ABS). Square version on the right is wrong lol but the thickness was right. Once glued up I could stand on this and it took my weight.

After a few changes and reverting back to 4mm thickness, I got these:

Additional work was on the sloped panels, wood working with 3D supports:


The lids are doubled up to give extra strength:


Really happy with how it’s coming together.

Rear supports #3Dprinted and screwed into place (last picture).

A detail I’d missed is that the legs on the mast base are not silver but a dark colour, possibly black, possibly blue…... So I masked them off and sprayed them up black for now.

The correct logic panel tops were printed, in my haste, I’d uploaded the older versions last week.

These, along with the other panels, I primed and sprayed them blue. They look great.


Test fitted them back on the body:


Did some more filling and sanding of the wood and it’s edges.
Marked and drilled the axle holes:


Then started to apply a coat of primer to the front half of the body.

Some more prep work to be done and need to buy some more primer spray paint.

Had a week away to relax, then back on with the build.

CAD working on 3D printable tracks, well….they’ll look good on the model, but as for actually printing them…..maybe not my thinking was that the tracks are not available easily here in the UK.



I did do some slight changes to the main drive wheel file. Originally I had them as a two piece parts, but decided to have a go at printing as a single wheel. I added an inner chamfered edge to (hopefully) help with the inner track guide.



The first wheel came out great, the other three are getting printed over the weekend (in work), 2days plus!!

Next on my todo list, sanding, primer, filler, repeat.
Had to order some more primer. So a few days to wait before it arrived, then gave the base a full coat all over.



Wood filler applied, sanded, filled repeat. Then touched up with primer again and sand.
New coat of primer:


Once happy and fully dried, I gave the whole base a coat of blue paint.



Test fitted parts.
I’ll respray again once dried.

Been looking at how to power WED, motors, and either chain or belt drive???
I was thinking about over power lol scooter motors, but looking at other builds this might be overkill

Hi everyone, with the Propstores upcoming auction for John Stears 'droid manuals', it got me revisiting the missing 'plates' (instruction pages) for the Treadwell droid.
These are in part contained in the Magazine article, the one page with all the images on, but not as the actual individual 'A4' size sheets, so to speak.
This was always something that has bugged me lol, so I did some online searching and found another auction from earlier this year, Ryedale auctioneers, which featured some higher quality images and also some 'missing pages'.
I've included the link here below, but I screen grabbed as high a quality image of the pages and have incorporated them, along with some of my own recreated missing pages, to create this PDF file of the manual.

This is by no means the actual version, and I believe there is the wiring diagram missing (??) mentioned in the General Notes for Plate 3, as well as a good quality radio control layout, but it is as good as I could get it. I'm happy with this for my own personal use alongside my Treadwell, for displaying at events etc.

I'll upload the PDF to the files section.
