There was some speculation that the body is the shell of a bin, like a garbage bin. I don't remember where that discussion happened though, some shells seemed close, but not perfect.
The droid seems to be pretty clearly a mashup of a Treadwell and whatever the shell is. It has Treadwell wheels and a Treadwell head.
